The Galo de Barcelos: a Portuguese symbol of faith and luck
Share
A legend at the heart of Portuguese folklore
The Galo de Barcelos is undoubtedly the most colorful and joyous symbol of Portugal. Behind this proud and decorated rooster lies a popular legend passed down from generation to generation: that of a pilgrim unjustly accused, miraculously saved by a rooster that crowed before being roasted.
This story, which originated in the city of Barcelos, has made the Galo an emblem of righted injustice, faith and hope.
A universal Portuguese emblem
Recognizable by its bright colours, patterns and proud bearing, the rooster is now everywhere: in ceramics, in markets, in homes and even in the luggage of travellers.
It symbolizes joy, luck and Portuguese identity, worn with pride in the country and by the diaspora.
